3 Dog-Friendly Trails in Kluane National Park

  1. Saint Elias Lake

Saint Elias Lake is a 5 mile out and back trail. The first half of the trail takes you through a forest and the second half through a valley surrounded by mountains. This is one of those trails where I found the journey more beautiful than the destination. The scenery along the trail is beautiful, especially in the fall with all the foliage. Once at the lake, there is a firepit and one spot where you can access the lake. There is a large parking lot at the trailhead, and the trail is not very difficult aside from a few inclines. Max had a great time on this trail, although he was exhausted afterwards.

2. Kathleen Lake

There are two options at Kathleen Lake. For a real hike, there is a trailhead for the Cottonwood Trail, which is a 4.4 mile out and back trail. If you are looking for a lighter day, like we were, there is a short trail along the lakeshore with a boardwalk and access to the beach and lake. Max enjoyed exploring the lakeshore and going for a swim.

3. Dezadeash River Trail

Dezadeash River Trail is a 3.6 mile out and back trail. The trailhead is located right in the town of Haines Junction. This trail is very flat and easy, with some boardwalks through a marsh. There are beautiful views of the river and the mountains behind it. We did this trail in late September and were blessed with beautiful fall foliage. There were a lot of bear warning signs at the trailhead, but I did not encounter any. Max had fun on this trail and it was not busy. The parking lot is very large, with enough space to park a camper or RV. My advice is to head to Frosty’s after the hike and treat yourself to an ice cream!
