- Hike: High Falls Sate Park
High Falls State Park in Jackson, Georgia has trails around the cascades of the Towaliga River. The lake here is a top fishing spot for bass. Parking costs $5. While Max enjoyed exploring the river’s edge at first, it did get a little too hot for him. The park was very crowded and there were many other dogs around, but the trail was narrow and it was difficult to find space to pass other dogs. It was a very hot summer day and I was hoping Max would have ample opportunity to swim in the river, but the current was moving so fast he wasn’t able to get in the water except for one spot. I was afraid he would overheat on the trails, so we cut this visit short. Though it is along a river, I would recommend holding off if it is too hot outside.

2. Hike: Morningside Nature Preserve
Morningside Nature Preserve is a hidden gem for dog swimming. The trail takes you to a river with a little beach, known as the dog beach. It is not uncommon to see dogs off leash and swimming at this beach. We went on a hot summer day and Max was so elated to be able to swim and cool off that I couldn’t get him out of the water! The trail is a 1.6 mile loop that was very easy. Parking is free in the lot at the trailhead.

3. Explore: Krog Street Tunnel
The Krog Street tunnel in Atlanta is covered in graffiti and always changing, since local artists cover old art with new art. The tunnel is dark and shaded, which Max appreciated on a hot summer day. Exiting the tunnel, there is more art along the Atlanta Beltline Southeast Trail on Wylie Street SE. I found this art to be more impressive than the tunnel art.

4. Stay: The Tree Haus ATL
The coolest place to stay in Atlanta is a dog-friendly treehouse in Smyrna. Tree Haus ATL is settled in a suburb, but you would never know it when you’re there. It has an amazing deck and is close to shopping and restaurants. Situated in a suburban neighborhood, it was also ideal for Max’s morning and evening walks. You can enjoy a fire in the firepit here, relax on the deck with your pup, or explore the stream down below the treehouse. Check them out on instagram @thetreehausatl
