2 Dog-Friendly Trails in Olympic National Forest

  1. Murhut Falls

Murhut Falls is a 1.5 mile out and back trail. The road to the trailhead is a 3.7 mile dirt road that has obnoxious, large potholes and bumps. The trail starts with an incline right off the bat. There are a few streams at the beginning of the trail if your dog needs to stop for a drink. The trail flattens out at about 0.4 miles in. It is a very well-maintained trail. At 0.65 miles, the trail descends downhill towards the waterfall. You can either take an upper trail to the large, main waterfall or you can take a lower trail that leads to a view of a smaller triple waterfall. Max loved this exploring the rocks along the river. Since we were alone at the waterfall, I was able to let him off leash to explore a bit.

2. Ranger Hole

This trail is 1.6 miles out and back. The parking lot is at a cabin that can be rented out, so be sure to respect the property as people may be staying there. It is a mostly flat and easy trail, but does end with a steep descent downhill right before you get to Ranger Hole. There are some stairs that make the descent easier. There are lots of overlook spots on the rocks to take a peek at the flowing river, but be careful because it can be slippery and it is a sharp edge to the raging water below. Climbing back up was a good workout and there is a thoughtfully placed bench at the top if you need a break.
